Should Orioles trade for a starter or reliever? | MAILBAG

Most weekdays, I’ll be answering at least one Orioles question. If you’d like to submit a question, send it to: Rich@BaltimoreBaseball.com. Questions may be edited for clarity, length and style.

Question: Do you think the Orioles will have to add a pitcher before the trade deadline. Do you think they’ll get a starter or reliever? From: Mark Cooper

Answer: Mark, I think they’ll try to get both a starter and a reliever, and perhaps even two relievers. As manager Brandon Hyde has said, it’s inevitable there will be more injuries, and another veteran starter would be nice. Another reliever to help at the back end of the bullpen, particularly a right-hander, would be a nice addition, too.

Question: John Means just got Tommy John surgery and rehab is 12 to 18 months, but his contract ends after this year.  Do the Orioles still have to help with rehab since he got hurt while under contract with them? From: Rob Jefferson

Answer: Rob, yes, the Orioles are obligated to assist with his rehab because the injury occurred while under contract to them. Means could always choose to rehab on his own next year as many players who are free agents have done.
