Longtime Orioles trainer Brian Ebel, who served as head athletic trainer for the last seven years, is leaving the organization. News of Ebel’s departure was first reported by The Athletic and confirmed by an industry source.
Ebel began working for the organization in 1985 and worked in the minor leagues before his promotion to the Orioles in 1996 as assistant athletic trainer. He succeeded Richie Bancells in 2018 and became the fourth head trainer in team history.
Ebel, who is widely respected in the industry, was an American League trainer for the All-Star Game and was credited with successfully leading the Orioles through the Covid-ravaged 60-game season in 2020 with minimal disruption.
His departure is one of a number of changes to the staff. Co-hitting coaches Ryan Fuller and Matt Borgschulte, who left for a hitting coach job with Minnesota; bench coach Fredi González; and major league coach Jose Hernández won’t return.
The Orioles have Mark Shires and Patrick Wesley on staff as assistant athletic trainers, and Chris Poole served as assistant to the head athletic trainer.
