The Orioles made a flurry of roster moves ahead of Thursday’s game against the Houston Astros. They optioned left-handed starter Trevor Rogers, infielder Liván Soto and right-hander Colin Selby to Triple-A Norfolk, activated infielder Emmanuel Rivera, recalled left-hander Nick Vespi from Norfolk and purchased the contract of right-hander Matt Bowman while designating left-hander Bruce Zimmermann for assignment.
Rogers, whom the Orioles acquired from Miami on July 30th, is 0-2 with a 7.11 ERA in four starts. Selby threw three scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Soto, who was active for seven games in two stints with the Orioles but didn’t play, was reacquired along with outfielder Austin Slater on July 30th.
Rivera, who plays first and third base, was claimed off waivers from Miami on Wednesday. Bowman, a native of Chevy Chase, who signed a minor league contract with the Orioles on August 15th, threw three hitless innings at Norfolk. He had a 5.40 ERA in 10 games with Arizona, Minnesota and Seattle this season. Vespi has a 3.18 ERA in 10 games for the Orioles this season. He’s 2-1 with a 7.71 ERA and a save at Norfolk.
Zimmermann, a Baltimore-area native, was 8-10 with a 5.77 ERA from 2020-2023 with the Orioles. This season, he’d been at Norfolk and was 3-4 with a 4.64 ERA.
