In his first game in his second stint in the major leagues, Orioles second baseman Jackson Holliday hit his first major league home run, a grand slam, against Toronto’s Yerry Rodriguez in the fifth inning of Wednesday afternoon’s game. It gave the Orioles an 8-3 lead.
Holliday’s home run traveled 439 feet and landed on Eutaw Street. It came on an 0-2 count. The spot where it landed on Eutaw Street was marked, and fans immediately began taking pictures of it on their cell phones.
Fans also demanded a curtain call from Holliday, who waved to the crowd during James McCann’s at-bat.
He’s the third Orioles player to hit a grand slam as their first major league homer, joining Fritz Connolly on April 19th, 1985 and Frank Baker on April 19th, 1973.
Holliday had been 2-for-34, with 18 strikeouts, in his first stint with the Orioles in April and was sent down after 10 games. He grounded out in his first two at-bats on Wednesday and just missed a three-run homer to left field in the at-bat after the grand slam before striking out.
Immediately before Holliday’s home run, third baseman Jordan Westburg was hit on the right hand by a pitch, loading the bases. Westburg left the game after he scored and was replaced at third by Ramón Urias.
