Orioles place Mateo on injured list with elbow injury, recall Norby and Baker, option McDermott

The Orioles placed infielder Jorge Mateo on the 10-day injured list retroactive to Wednesday because of left elbow subluxation (dislocated elbow). Mateo, playing second base, collided with shortstop Gunnar Henderson in Tuesday night’s game.

To replace Mateo, who is hitting .229 with five home runs and 18 RBIs, the Orioles recalled Connor Norby from Triple-A Norfolk. Norby replaced Mateo on the 26-man roster last month after Mateo went to the 7-day concussion list. Norby was 3-for-14 (.182) with a homer and two RBIs. At Norfolk, Norby hit .297 with a .908 OPS with 16 home runs and 57 RBIs.

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said after Wednesday night’s loss to Miami — the Orioles’ second straight 6-3 loss to the Marlins — that Norby would get playing time, starting with Thursday afternoon’s game against the Marlins. He also hoped Norby could provide a spark to his team after three straight defeats.

After Wednesday night’s game, the Orioles optioned right-hander Chayce McDermott to Norfolk and recalled relief pitcher Bryan Baker. McDermott started against Miami and allowed three runs on five hits in four innings, walking two and striking out three.

Baker was 1-1 with a 4.32 ERA in 13 games. He was optioned to Norfolk to make room for McDermott, but he’s technically replacing Mateo on the roster, so he can be recalled.

McDermott could return on Monday as the 27th man to start a game in the Orioles’ doubleheader with Toronto. Cade Povich also could be recalled to start one of those games.
