BALTIMORE—The Orioles optioned left-handed starter Cade Povich after Friday night’s game. Povich allowed three runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings, walking five and striking out six in the Orioles’ 4-1 loss to the New York Yankees.
Povich is 1-4 with a 6.27 earned-run average in seven starts for the Orioles.
Right-hander Vinny Nittoli had his contract selected from Triple-A Norfolk. The move gives the Orioles a ninth reliever for the time being.
Nittoli, who signed with the Orioles as a free agent on July 2nd, was 0-1 with a 2.25 ERA in seven games with Oakland this season. He’s pitched in 13 games with Seattle, Philadelphia, the New York Mets and the Athletics in the last four seasons.
He was 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA in three games with Norfolk.
To make room on the 40-man roster for Nittoli, the Orioles transferred left-hander Danny Coulombe from the 15-day to 60-day injured list. Coulombe had surgery to remove bone chips from his left elbow.
