The Orioles have recalled outfielder Heston Kjerstad from Triple-A Norfolk. Kjerstad will replace Austin Hays, who was placed on the 10-day injured list on Monday with a strained left calf muscle. That move was retroactive to Sunday.
Kjerstad was hitting .349 in 21 games with Norfolk with 10 home runs and 30 RBIs and a 1.176 OPS.
In 13 games last season with the Orioles, Kjerstad hit .233 with two home runs and three RBIs. He was placed on the roster for the Division Series against Texas but didn’t play.
To make room for Kjerstad on the 26-man roster, the Orioles optioned catcher David Bañuelos to Norfolk. Bañuelos was active for Monday night’s game but didn’t play. He didn’t get a hit in his only at-bat on April 16th in his major league debut.
