Hyde voted AL Manager of the Year by The Sporting News; Rutschman, Santander, Brooks Robinson nominated for Silver Slugger, Players Choice Awards

Brandon Hyde has been voted American League Manager of the Year by The Sporting News. Hyde, who guided to the Orioles to 83 wins in 2022, 31 more than in 2021, won the award, which is voted on by the other American League managers.

Hyde received 50 percent of the vote and edged out Houston’s Dusty Baker and Cleveland’s Terry Francona, according to The Sporting News.

It’s the eighth time an Orioles manager has won the award, the first since Buck Showalter won it in 2012. Showalter, who was in his first season managing the New York Mets, was voted the National League’s Manager of the Year,

Winners of the  Baseball Writers’ Association of America’s awards will be announced next month.

More award news: Catcher Adley Rutschman and outfielder Anthony Santander are finalists for the American League Silver Slugger awards.

Rutschman is one of four catchers nominated. Toronto’s Alejandro Kirk, Oakland’s Sean Murphy and Seattle’s Cal Raleigh are the others.

Santander is one of 10 outfielders nominated. The others are New York’s Aaron Judge, Seattle’s Julio Rodriguez, Los Angeles’ Mike Trout and Taylor Ward, Toronto’s Teoscar Hernández and George Springer, Tampa Bay’s Randy Arozarena, Houston’s Kyle Tucker and Texas’ Adolis Garcia.

The award is voted on by American League managers and coaches. The winners will be announced on November 10th.

Cedric Mullins won a Silver Slugger in 2021.

Rutschman joined Rodriguez and Kansas City’s Bobby Witt Jr. as one of three finalists for American League Outstanding Rookie in the Players Choice Awards, which are voted on by major league players.

Orioles legend Brooks Robinson is one of three finalists for the Curt Flood Award. Robinson was cited because of his support of the Major League Baseball Players Association and union chief Marvin Miller in the association’s early years. Robinson is also credited with helping found the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association.

Buck Martinez and Steve Rogers are the other finalists.

The Players Choice awards will be announced on ESPN on November 3rd at 6 p.m.
