NEW YORK—In three taut games, each one decided by one run, the Orioles won their first road series since mid-July and their first in New York since March 2019.
A four-run seventh inning lifted the Orioles past the New York Yankees, 8-7, before an announced crowd of 33,091 at Yankee Stadium on Sunday.
The Orioles (43-92) won two of three against the Yankees (78-58), who have lost six of eight since winning 13 in a row.
Although the Yankees didn’t look impressive in their 4-3 win in 11 innings on Friday night or their 4-3 loss on Saturday, they did hold a lead on Sunday after six, and the Orioles were 7-75 when trailing after six innings.
“We crawled our way back there with some really good at-bats there in the sixth and the seventh inning,” manager Brandon Hyde said. “We did a lot of really good things in this series. We had a chance to win all three games.”
The Orioles trailed by three runs heading into the seventh. Andrew Heaney, who gave up four home runs to them on August 2nd in the 7-1 win that preceded the 19-game losing streak, had a nightmarish inning.
He hit Trey Mancini with a pitch to begin the inning. DJ Stewart and Austin Hays singled to load the bases. Jahmai Jones, who came into the game when Ramón Urias left because of upper leg soreness, doubled to score Mancini and Stewart.
With one out, Jorge Mateo singled on the 12th pitch from Heaney (8-9) and drove in Hays to tie the score, 7-7.
Wandy Peralta relieved Heaney and Kelvin Gutiérrez blooped a single over shortstop to score Jones and give the Orioles an 8-7 lead.
“I let our guys know it’s OK to win, 7-2, also,” Hyde said.
Marcos Diplán (1-0), the fourth Oriole pitcher, got the win.
Tanner Scott struck out Joey Gallo to end the eighth after DJ LeMahieu singled off Scott’s glove with two outs. Scott recorded five outs.
Tyler Wells retired Aaron Judge on a fly to right, Giancarlo Stanton on a popup to second, and Anthony Rizzo on the fly to left in the ninth for his first career save.
“Watching Tanner Scott and Tyler Wells pitch there at the end, that was a great job of pitching,” Hyde said. “Tanner almost went through the entire order after pitching yesterday. Tyler Wells with his first career save. I’ve been trying to get him a save opportunity for two months.”
After LeMahieu began the first with a single, Keegan Akin struck out Gallo, Judge and Stanton to end the inning.
In the second, Gary Sánchez hit a grand slam put the Yankees ahead, 4-1.
Hays hit his 15th home run to left against Corey Kluber in the second gave the Orioles a 1-0 lead.
In the first, Cedric Mullins drew a walk to begin the game. He stole his 26th base and moved to third on a wild throw by Sánchez. Kluber struck out Anthony Santander, Mancini and Stewart to end the inning.
Urias singled with one out in the fourth, moved to third on a double by Pedro Severino and scored on a fly ball to left by Mateo.
Kluber, who began the game with a 5-1 record and 3.05 ERA in nine previous starts against the Orioles, went 3 2/3 innings.
The Orioles had multiple opportunities to score. In the third, they had Mullins on second and Mancini on first with two outs, and Stewart flied to right to end the inning.
In the fourth, after Mateo’s sacrifice fly, they had Severino on second and Gutiérrez on first after Kluber hit him with a pitch. Joelly Rodriguez, who replaced Kluber, struck out Mullins to end the inning.
Rodriguez walked Mancini and Stewart with one out in the fifth. After a ground ball by Hays advanced them to second and third, Urías grounded to first to end the inning.
Conner Greene replaced Akin to start the fifth. Greene walked LeMahieu and Gallo. A run-scoring single by Anthony Rizzo brought LeMahieu home to give the Yankees a 5-2 lead.
Akin allowed four runs on three hits, walking two and striking out five. He retired eight of the last nine and threw 86 pitches in four innings.
Mullins hit a two-run home run with two outs in the sixth against Albert Abreu. It scored Gutiérrez, who beat out an infield single.
It was his 25h home run, tying him with Ryan Mountcastle for the team lead and made him the third Oriole with 25 home runs and 25 stolen bases, joining Don Baylor (1975) and Reggie Jackson (1976).
“It’s crazy,” Mullins said. “Just to be told it’s been a solid minute since someone has come around put together a 25/25 season. I’m just out there putting my all every single day and to have the results show is a pretty amazing feeling.”
Mullins also leads the team in hits. No Oriole has ever led the team in hits, home runs and stolen bases in the same season.
He’s proud that the Orioles came into Yankee Stadium and won two of three.
“It’s huge,” Mullins said. “It just kind of goes back to us having faith in each other. We always felt like we were very competitive and it just didn’t show at times.”
Santander followed Mullins’ home run by lining to right-center, but Stanton made a fabulous play to spear it on a diving catch to end the inning.
Sánchez hit a two-run home run against Diplán in the sixth to put the Yankees ahead, 7-4.
The Orioles split their six-game road trip to Toronto and New York.
“I think we’ve played well the whole road trip, really, Toronto and then here,” Akin said. “It’s huge to come in here and win two out of three and win a series and put up the runs we did today. And shout-out to the offense. They picked it up and picked up the pitching today, so they’re the focal point of the last few innings there, in my opinion.”
Notes: Mountcastle was rested after he fouled a ball off his right foot on Saturday. ,,, Hyde said he was waiting to decide on his rotation for the four-game Kansas City series that begins Monday at 1:05 p.m. …Zac Lowther will start Monday’s game. I think you're missing the point Benji is making Pajamaboy. The O's might have had a chance at a winning season this year if he had chose not to tank. He obviously has been pulling hard on the reigns since he arrived, expecially so this year. Had he (they) spent some $$ on a handful of pitchers from outside the organization this past year, things would have been interesting.
Now don't go asking me to provide another list of affordable arms he could have made a play for, we've been down that road before.
So..the question begs, IS Elias going to make an effort this year? If not ... yeah .. it's time to fire Elias. He's is and has been why the Orioles have stunk it up. There is no debate on that.
Boog, once again you are blaming Elias for the Orioles miserly payroll ... you somehow seem to believe that the ownership has authorized Elias to spend an extra $20 or $25 million on payroll, which Elias simply refuses to spend ... the only problem is that there is no evidence to support your theory, and it is contrary to what we know about how the Angelos family operates.
He and the Angelos brothers sat at their on day one stating he had full autonomy to run the franchise as he saw fit.
He's a tanker. Bottom line. Elias is the ONLY REASON we're losing 100 games again ...and again...and again

I don't like to engage in this type of foolishness, but you must be deliberately trying to Stir-the-Pot here....this Franchise was destroyed when Elias arrived on the scene. Do you need to be reminded that this team LOST 115 games the year he was hired??
People who think that you can go out and sign a FA here and there and turn this team around are showing a complete (and profound) lack of understanding how things are in MLB.
Are you okay w the Orioles being wannabe's for lousy teams like the Pirates, Indians, Diamondbacks, Rockies, Rangers, Twins, Mariners, and Reds?? Even these laggard Franchises have started to figure things out.

Good game today and nice to get a series win. They kept clawing back, took some small ball swings, got lucky with some balls dropping in, but it’s a W in any event.
Agree with other recent posts from a previous thread about Stanton in RF. He helped us out with his inept defense. He may be able to throw, but his outfield approach is lacking.
Sanchez has a career day offensively and we come back. Nice.
Was quite anxious when Hyde went to Scott, especially after him walking the first batter. He throws a lot of stuff at opposing batters’s feet.
Daggone, Wells looks good. Nice repertoire but more importantly he has even keeled mound presence.
Great post except for calling Stanton inept, he's rated 42 out of 122 of RF's with at least 50 inninngs by FanGraphs, but go with the mean kids and call him names if you feel better...

Look who calls the pitches ? Akin who I will admit has shown some consistent improvement and he also showed something today bouncing back after the second . My question is did the second have to happen ? Why did he throw 9 straight fastballs why was that question not asked ? This is Akin’s weakness the inability to get a breaking ball over in big situations. This is a perfect lack of development in the minors und Duquette. Your not beating a mlb hitter throwing just fastballs . He needs to really work on his breaking stuff over the winter .
Akin is starting to give me hope again, could he finally be figuring it out?

Why would they choose to start Lowther who’s been on rehab assignments from Norfolk down in Florida and Bowie for the past month with only one start at Norfolk (September 1st… 5 2/3 innings, 4 hits, 3 runs, 1HR) when they have Alex Wells, already here, who had 3 straight outings giving up a total of but 1 run at Norfolk. Makes little to no sense… but then why would management do anything that makes sense and ruin their record… just saying…
At this point it’s time to see who can do what. I’m all giving pitchers like Lpwther a few 5 inning starts to see if there is any reason to keep him for next year.
I’d also like to see Tyler Wells get a start before the season ends.
I’m just now watching highlights of O’s win today as I didn’t get to see the game. My play of the game goes to one Kelvin Gutierrez. Two outs, nobody on, O’s trailing 5-2 and he beats out a grounder to SS and Mullins follows with his 25th HR. Tremendous hustle by Gutierrez. It’s plays like that that if I were Hyde I’d be giving that guy more playing opportunity. That REALLY showed me something. Kudos to him.
All I’m hearing when I watch MLB network or ESPN (which I very rarely do) is that Ohtani seems to have a lock on the MVP over Guerrero Jr. Well, I’m hear today to ask why is Salvador Perez not in the mix. He’s having a remarkable season while playing the toughest position in the game. No disrespect to Ohtani or Guerrero but if I had a vote I’d give it to Salvy without thinking twice about it.
Dave, Perez is having an outstanding season, but Ohtani is doing something that’s never been done before, and he’s creating positive interest in the game.
Very nerve-wracking, but enjoyable, win. Yanks had a lot on the line and the O's had absolutely nothing to lose. Who knows, maybe the Yankees end up with the 2nd Wild Card slot. If the boys in pinstripes have to play the Wild Card game at Fenway, they can thank the Orioles.
I wouldn't mind an IF(2B,SS,3B) of Jones,Mateo,Guttierez for the balance of the season. Let's "see" them get the balance of the playing time. That trio were my "collective" hero's of the game Sunday. Of course Urias needs some air time too. Boy is Santander streaky. Friday morning I despised the idea of watching this series on a Yankees network but ya know what--it was a lot of fun. It's very morose in the Bronx right now. Rich wondering if Bannon/Martin will be here mid Sept? Kinda hope not. Development needs continuous playing time. Let's not over-populate the IF.
