Clutch hits in 6th lift Orioles past Blue Jays; 2nd strong start for Akin; Wells delivers in relief

Toronto Blue Jays left-hander Hyun Jin Ryu had the Orioles baffled into the sixth inning. Ryu, who had a 3-0 record with a 2.89 ERA in three starts against the Orioles this season, had a no-hitter with two outs in the sixth.

Then the Orioles scored three runs against him and held on for a 4-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre on Tuesday night, ending a four-game losing streak.

It was the Orioles’ first win on the road since August 2nd and just their third win in their last 26 games.

With two outs and Toronto (69-62) leading 1-0, Ryan Mountcastle doubled. Austin Hays singled to score Mountcastle. Anthony Santander walked, and Ramón Urias doubled to score Hays and Santander to give the Orioles (41-90) a 3-1 lead.

Ryu (12-8) allowed three runs on three hits in 5 2/3, walking three and striking out six.

“We got some big hits today,” manager Brandon Hyde said. “Ryu was dominating us for the first half of the game. Mountcastle, that was just a beautiful piece of hitting, a great at-bat, staying in the at-bat, taking the ball the other way to break it up. Hays smoked that ball, Urías with that huge hit. That’s the hit we’ve not gotten … That’s something that’s escaped us a lot this year.”

Coming into the sixth, Ryu had allowed two walks in the first — a leadoff walk to Cedric Mullins, who stole second for his 25th steal, and one to Santander. Mullins moved to third on a wild pitch, bur Urías struck out looking.

Ryu retired 15 straight until Mountcastle’s double.

Keegan Akin (2-8) won his second straight game with another strong start. Danny Jansen’s home run in the third was the only run Akin allowed. He pitched five innings, allowing a run on two hits, walking three and striking out five.

“Any win at this point feels good,” Akin said. “It’s good to see some young guys contribute and step up. We’re starting to play some better ball and hopefully we can take the series tomorrow.”

On August 26th, Akin pitched a career-high seven innings, allowing a run on three hits in a 13-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels.

“Build off that outing against the Angels and bring that confidence into this one,” Akin said. “Especially against that lineup. One through 9, they can take advantage of you at any point.”

Jorge López allowed Vladimir Guerrero Jr’s 39th home run, his third in two games, in the sixth.

Jorge Mateo led off with a walk against Toronto reliever Adam Cimber in the seventh and moved to third when Cimber’s pickoff throw was wild. Jahmai Jones singled to center for his first RBI with the Orioles for a 4-2 lead. In his first week with the Orioles, Jones is just 3-for-23 (.130).

“It’s been a lot of fun just to be up here, but I want to contribute as much as I can,” Jones said. “Any opportunity we get is an opportunity to prove ourselves, prove why we should be here. This next month is going to be a lot of fun just to get your first taste of considerable time in the major leagues, not only that, but an opportunity to show why you should be an everyday guy.”

In the seventh, Corey Dickerson singled with one out. George Springer hit into a force out, and Marcus Semien singled.

Tyler Wells replaced López, and Guerrero lined to center to end the inning.

“The game was right there,” Hyde said. “I felt like that was the biggest spot in the game … Tyler Wells won us the game right there.”

In the eighth, Teoscar Hernández singled with one out. Lourdes Gurriel hit into a force play and Randal Grichuk flied to left to end the inning.

Cole Sulser pitched a spotless ninth for his sixth save. It was the Orioles’ first save since Sulser recorded back-to-back saves on July 30-31.

Akin will get chances to prove that he can be a major league starter in the final weeks of the season.

“He’s going to get plenty more starts,” Hyde said. “We’re going to see him a lot. The lineups that he’s going to face, if you look at our lineups in September, it’s going to be teams that are trying to make a push for the postseason and trying to win every single game, and that’s a great way to evaluate a player at the major league level. This division can only get you better.”

Note: Matt Harvey (6-14, 6.18 ERA) will face Steven Matz (10-7, 3.81) on Wednesday night.

Minor league update: Mike Baumann (1-1) allowed a run on five hits in six innings in Triple-A Norfolk’s 1-0 loss to Charlotte. The Tides were held to five hits, all singles, two by centerfielder Zach Jarrett.

Centerfielder Zach Watson drove in five runs in Double-A Bowie’s 13-10 loss to Somerset. The Baysox scored seven runs in the second, and the Patriots scored six in the eighth Knuckleballer Mickey Jannis allowed six runs on seven hits.

In the completion of a game suspended on August 8th, High-A Aberdeen defeated Jersey Shore, 4-2. Jersey Shore took the regularly scheduled game, 6-2, in seven innings.

First baseman Jacob Teter, catcher Connor Pavolony and designated hitter Dontá Williams each drove in four runs as Low-A Delmarva beat Carolina, 18-9. Colton Cowser, the Orioles’ top draft choice, drove in two runs, had two hits and scored three runs. The Shorebirds scored five runs in the third, seven in the fifth and six in the sixth. In a rehab start, Cam Bishop allowed four runs on five hits while recorded just two outs.

    • I’m not sure I understand your question. If there’s expansion in the majors, it’s likely several years away.

  • Akin seems to have figured something out. Maybe it’s that he got his confidence back. Either way it’s a step in the right direction for him. Which is good. The bullpen actually pitched well for once and didn’t make it interesting. Still don’t trust any of them and was holding my breath with sulser in the ninth. Maybe Hyde was referring to Baumann. His next turn is Sunday. So hopefully it’s him.

  • Probably best all-round game since that 7-1 victory over the Yankees(of course they lost 19 in a row following). Maybe they have finally weeded out the bullpen issues(Tate we're watching you now). Good move by Hyde in assembling the OF alignment. Jays don't K much so put players who can run and catch it--he did. Santander and Stewart out there and they would have lost the game. Jays figuring out Mullins?--throw high heat,he can't seem to resist it lately. Pitching from the stretch and quick pitching may just be the remedy for Akin. Are we looking at Holt's best accomplishment this year(turning Akin around)? Lopez giving up HR to Vlad? No big deal--who doesn't? Sorry Ohtani, sorry Trout, sorry Betts, sorry Tatis,Jr-- I'm about to crown Vlad baseball's best hitter(power AND tied for lead in hits).

      • It was the "good thing they didn't keep him in minors" shot/dig bit CP. Questions aren't the only things that need to be let go...Now that has been cleared up, let's compare Vlad Jr and Adley's pro career paths...Vlad was signed in 2015 when he was 16, spent 2016 in Rookie ball, spent 2017 in A and A+ ball, spent 2018 in AA and AAA ball. I've typed slow, hopefully you counted 3 years in the minors for Vlad. This is Adley's 2nd year in the minors. He most likely will be with the O's in the major leagues next year. But you keep on with your cute lil' shots and digs, you're like a pouting teenager...it's wonderful!

        • Compare Vlads path to that of Mountcastles. That's where this debate started last night Richard. Not with Adley.

  • It looks like Akin is finally rounding into shape after 75 innings . He seems to be able to command the fastball better . His breaking stuff needs to be further refined . I can not understand why he failed to grasp the opportunity he was given in spring training . The Orioles basically gift wrapped him a rotation spot and he blew it badly . He needs to WORK this off season on his breaking stuff and while he is at it how about on a pick-off move ala the great Mike Flanagan big difference from having a man on first and a man on second. You have to defend yourself.
Continue to be impressed with Urias all he does is drive in big runs .

  • Question:
When can we expect to see international signings coming to America and start play in Delmarva and is there a top 5 list with details about position etc

    • Does Florida count as America? Both Orioles Orange and Black have dozens on international prospects on their rosters...Plus Delmarva has had 14 international players on their roster this season - see Yorkislandy Alvarez, Jean Pinto (not a signee, but international player acquired in a trade). So, the answer is "soon"
