The Orioles traded left-handed starter Tommy Milone to the Atlanta Braves for two players to be named later on Sunday.
They also traded reliever Mychal Givens to the Colorado Rockies for two infielders and a player to be named later.
Milone was signed to a minor league contract on February 14th just after spring training began, and was the Orioles’ Opening Day starter on July 24th after John Means was held back because of arm fatigue.
In six starts, the 33-year-old left-hander was 1-4 with a 3.99 ERA. Milone was listed as Monday’s starter against Toronto.
The Orioles are receiving two players to be named later, according to reports. They’ll be prospects who are not in Atlanta’s 60-man player pool. It’s the third deal Orioles executive vice president/general manager Mike Elias has made since the season began.
On July 31st, Elias sent left-handed reliever Richard Bleier to the Miami Marlins for a player to be named later. Two days before, he sent right-hander Hector Velázquez, who was acquired during spring training and never pitched for the team, to Houston for a player to be named later.
The trade deadline is at 4 p.m. on Monday. Other Orioles mentioned in trade speculation have been relief pitcher Miguel Castro, starter Alex Cobb and second baseman Hanser Alberto.
Cobb’s contract might be an impediment. He’s in the third year of a four-year $57 million contract.
The Orioles will have to find their second replacement starter in a week. Last Sunday, left-hander Wade LeBlanc, who also was signed to a minor league contract, suffered a season-ending elbow injury.
LeBlanc was replaced in the rotation by Jorge López, who will start Sunday in Buffalo against the Blue Jays.
The Orioles could use left-hander Keegan Akin, who was promoted from the alternate site at Bowie, or use Thomas Eshelman, who has major league starting experience to start on Monday.
Atlanta will be Milone’s eighth major league team. He had two iterations with Washington and also has pitched for Oakland, Minnesota, Milwaukee, the New York Mets and Seattle.
The Orioles have 39 players on their 40-man roster and 57 in their 60-man player pool.

Don't understand this deal. Well, it does tell us one of two things. Either Mr. Elias has given up hope of making the playoffs, or he never cared about making them in the 1st place. I suspect the latter. Since I have no idea of what they'll be getting in return, I won't use the T word here, but it does demonstrate that winning now is not on Elias' current agenda.
Rich please explain ... What I don't understand is that if the 2 players are not even in Atlanta's 60 player pool, why the heck do they have to be named later? Is it that Elias will be getting a choice from a pool of players and simply hasn't decided which he wants yet?
Ken, only players in the 60-man player pool can be traded this season. If you're acquiring players outside the player pool, which
generally means younger, more inexperienced ones, they can't be named until after the season because the rules prohibit it.
The Braves and Orioles may or may not have decided on the players. It's just that they can't be officially identified.

I enjoy bantering w/ the both of you. Never any malicious intent. You seemed to not like the trade of Milone in your original post. I was just curious as to why. But I gotcha.
Such is life w/ the returns this year. They can still be Relatively good ones. It does suck to not know with the rules this year.

We have Means, but really I am confused we are taking some lumps why not gain some experience?
We will see Akin who from what I’ve seen as average stuff. We may see Kremer hopefully but the rest of the lost Elias will say need more minor league experience which they won’t get this year. Rich I have no issues with Elias, but can you explain why Hyde refuses to let Akin start? It doesn’t make sense. Akin is trained as a started and can’t possibly be worse than Lopez.
Lopez ERA this year over 8. Over 6 in MLB career but Hyde likes what he’s seen. So a prospect gets sent down after one pitch
Do you really think these decisions are made by Hyde? I really suspect that Akin came up with a defined role to play, and that that role was defined by Elias.

I, too would like to see Keegan Akin and Dean Kremer get some starts, but I don’t think the Orioles believe Akin’s future is as a starter. Perhaps that changes.
By the way, Akin can’t start Monday unless someone goes to IL. I shouldn’t have have written that. He must stay at the alternate site for 10 days unless replacing an injured player. He’s on Day 4.
Well, Pip, apparently this season a player doesn't have to stay down for 10 days if they're replacing a player who's been traded.
Akin’s issue is his control. Scouts believe he’s too inefficient throwing strikes to stick in a big league rotation.
