The Orioles signed Oregon State catcher Adley Rutschman, the first overall pick in the draft, on Monday, the team announced.
Rutschman and general manager Mike Elias will hold a press conference on Tuesday afternoon. Rutschman will be introduced to the fans during the Orioles’ game with the San Diego Padres.
According to MLB.com’s Jim Callis, Rutschman signed for a record bonus of $8.1 million. The slot value for the pick was $8,415,300.
Since Oregon State’s season ended in an NCAA regional, Rutschman has won a number of awards, including the Golden Spikes Award and Dick Howser trophy.
It’s not known where or when Rutschman will begin his professional career.
Callis reported that the Orioles were also close to signing their second-round pick, Alabama high school shortstop Gunnar Henderson, who was taken 42st overall. The slot value for the first pick of the second round is $1,771,700, but Callis said Henderson, who was heavily recruited by Auburn, will sign for $2.3 million.
The Orioles have signed nine of their top 11 picks. Henderson and LSU outfielder Zach Watson, their third-round pick, have yet to sign.
Thirty of the 41 Orioles picks have signed. The deadline for signing picks is July 12 at 5 p.m

This is awesome news!!! Maybe they can sign some highly ranked International players as well for this year. And next year they should have the first round pick again!!! They will hopefully have a turnaround after year three with Alias. Not that far away!!!

This is great news. I imagine he will go to Sarasota and workout for a week or so. They will then be assign him to the minors, possibly Delmarva or Frederick.
I would imagine Delmarva initially. Sending the guy to high A immediately would be crazy aggressive.

Do we thing the 3rd round guy will be a problem at this point since all signs seem to indicate Henderson is virtually a done deal. Would hate to lose the 3rd round guy either. Get those final two locked down and we have the entire top 10 signed
Since Zach Watson is a college guy and doesn’t have the leverage of a high school player, I would think he signs. Of course, he could go back to college for another year, but moving from the third round to the first in a year is a risk. Orioles still have more than two weeks to sign him.

I don’t think it’s a big deal if he starts in Aberdeen or Delmarva in this case, so no, CB.
After loading up on position players in this draft, I hope they load up on pitching next year.
They loaded up on pitching the previous three years, cb, and some of them are making decent progress. Because they were doing well, Mike Elias felt empowered to take position players in the early rounds this year.
Yes, I'm not complaining about this year's draft. I think they did very well. It's been said there wasn't a lot of high level pitching talent this year. I'm saying next year, if the talent is there, go for pitching once again. You know not all of these young arms are going to pan out, and some, like Pop, Kremer, and Carrol, will deal with injuries. We have all heard it a million times, you never have too much (good) pitching. If they become overstocked with good arms (unlikely) you can trade to fill in your weak spots.
