NEW YORK—After two days of rain, the Orioles played a doubleheader on Wednesday and suffered two defeats.
David Hess allowed four home runs in a 5-3 loss to the New York Yankees in Game 1. Andrew Cashner turned in another strong performance in the second game, allowing just four hits and two runs in six innings, but the Orioles lost, 3-1. Cashner struck out seven, and his fastball hit 96 mph.
The Orioles are 14-28 and have lost six of seven. They move on to Cleveland to begin a four-game series against the Indians on Thursday.
Cashner didn’t allow a hit until the third when D.J. LeMahieu lined a ball off the pitcher’s glove and wrist and reached on a single. Athletic trainer Brian Ebel and manager Brandon Hyde checked on Cashner, who threw one warmup pitch and said he was fine.
But, on the next pitch, Luke Voit doubled to score LeMahieu. Gleyber Torres led off the fourth with his third home run of the doubleheader, eighth of the season and sixth against the Orioles.
Yankees starter Domingo German gave up just one hit in the first four innings. Stevie Wilkerson and Rio Ruiz began the fifth inning with singles to right, and Wilkerson scored from third on Hanser Alberto’s sacrifice fly to center.
The Orioles had one more scoring opportunity against German in the seventh. Chris Davis and Ruiz singled, and Pedro Severino walked to load the bases, but Joey Rickard grounded out to end the inning.
“We just didn’t get the big hit tonight,” Wilkerson said. “We had some opportunities to do that and just didn’t get the job done.”
German, who’s 8-1, allowed a run on six hits, striking out eight.
Cashner was removed after six innings and 92 pitches. He’s 4-2 with a 4.10 ERA.
“I think I’ve got a good feel right now,” Cashner said. “I think it’s just a full mix of pitches. I’m really working on my curveball, so I think that’s a big part. I think it comes down to fastball command and working both sides of the plate.”
Shawn Armstrong gave up a run in the seventh on a double to Thairo Estrada, and Voit’s RBI single.
The Orioles were 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position in the first game and 0-for-8 in the second game.
“I think all teams kind of go through those struggles at times,” manager Brandon Hyde said.
“I think when you’re not scoring a ton of runs and you’re in that kind of a situation, it’s natural to press. Guys try to do too much maybe and try to score the guy instead of taking their at-bat. So, I just think we still have to continue to have a middle-of-the-field approach and be able to think through the big part of the field and not try to do too much when we have runners out there.”
Zack Britton and Aroldis Chapman worked the eighth and ninth for the Yankees in both games.
“We’re facing a pretty good pitching staff,” Hyde said. “We faced Britton twice in day and Chapman twice in a day. It doesn’t get much harder than that. We were in both games, a couple hits short. They hit a couple more home runs than we did in the first game and one more than we did in the second game. Yeah, we just came up a little short in both games.”

I’m just hoping Nunez’s HR yesterday didn’t buy him another month on the team. I guess I should say I hope it gets him going but I’d rather see DJ Stewart.....
I don't know the about the rest of you, but I'm getting tired of this team in a hurry and am starting to wonder what this new-fangled Netflix thing is all about.
Hess gives up 4 homers in 4 innings, that's not really the mark of a major league pitcher. I believe that's 14 dingers given up this season and this is only the middle of May. What does the analytics tell us? Or do we really need analytics in this case. I don't think so!
I don’t think it’s analytics, Norm. Dan Straily still has a rotation spot and who do we call upon to replace 2 pitchers? Josh rogers is terrible in AAA and has mediocre stuff. Akin has only made 7 starts in AAA and they’ve been average. Ynoa is in our bullpen and I suppose he’s an option. As is Yefry Ramirez but thats just swapping a bad option for another bad option. If he keeps getting hit like that you’ll see it but it’s not analytics keeping him in there. It’s really our piss poor alternatives.
Wilkerson against Chapman in the ninth was like watching a major leaguer against a little leaguer... pathetic!
Rich, do you see Andrew Cashner as the most likely candidate for trade at the deadline? He really has been good this year. I believe he has an innings related option that automatically kicks in.
Chico, I think Cashner is the most marketable pitcher the Orioles have. While he has a n innings option for next year, he'd have to throw nearly 140 additional innings between now and the end of the season, which I don't see happening.
I know the plan is to give Mountcastle,Stewart,Mullins,Santander,Siscomore minor league Seasoning BUT in lieu of Nunez,Wilkerson,Wynns,Rickard--REALLY? Come on somebody,time to spice it up a little.
Stewart is performing at an elite level and has had 500+ ABS down there. Everyone else I can hear the argument for. Particularly Sisco who has no business being on a ML team with the way he’s playing defense. Santander isn’t doing much but I’d be fine w him coming up but he has to be behind Stewart. The problem is we have no CF and we need to have 2 of Rickard, Wilkerson, Mullins, or Mason Williams on the roster at all times. That means realistically it’s Stewart or Santander that has to take Nunez’s slot to get a promotion. I don’t think anyone in the org feels comfortable rolling with only 1 CF capable player. Though Calling Wilkerson CF capable over a guy like Stewart is really just an opinion. I can’t imagine D.J. being a very good defensive CF but neither is Wilkerson...
Or alberto if we wanted to keep Wilkerson around as the utility man. He’d also be an option to be DFA’d. He seems to be a clubhouse favorite but a .600 OPS isn’t going to cut it either.
I just find it mind boggling that a MLB team doesn’t have 1 capable player at any level that can play CF! How does that happen?? I’m not gonna say it but...... Oh heck, why not, we should’ve kept the guy we had!!!
It seems to me that some of you have already forgotten about the youth movement. This team is not going to win many games. It’s a process to see what these kids can do. Lower the payroll, and take your lumps. Give the new regime time to find the next diamonds in the ruff. We went fourteen years without a winner. I’d rather go two or three more, and hope that the new management can find consistency and breed wining baseball!
