O’s prepare for final day of draft — with eight pitchers already in the fold

FREE ARTICLE

The Orioles completed their second-day of drafting on Friday by selecting more collegiate players and more pitchers.

They’ll finish the 2016 draft up today with the final 30 rounds (11 to 40). It will be interesting to see if the Orioles target a lot more arms today. They probably will — executive vice president Dan Duquette said earlier this week he expected that more than half of the club’s overall picks would be pitchers.

So far, eight of their first 11 in 2016 were pitchers; six from colleges. They drafted just three position players: an outfielder, a shortstop and a first baseman, Preston Palmeiro, the son of former Oriole Rafael Palmeiro.

You’d think the Orioles might add more position players in the later rounds, but did I mention the Orioles love building pitching inventory?

Here’s a look at what they did on Friday:

3rd round (91st overall) – OF Austin Hays, 20, Jacksonville University, 6-foot, 205.

4th round (121) – RHP Brenan Hanifee, 18, Turner Ashby (Va.) HS, 6-4, 185.

5th round (151) – SS Alexis Torres, 18, Colegio Angel David (Puerto Rico), 6-0, 183.

6th round (181) – RHP Tobias Myers, 17, Winter Haven (Fla.) HS, 6-0, 193.

7th round (211) – 1B Preston Palmeiro, 21, North Carolina State, 6-0, 185.

8th round (241) – RHP Ryan Moseley, 21, Texas Tech, 6-3, 190.

9th round (271) — RHP Lucas Humpal, 22, Texas State, 6-4, 195

10th round (301) — RHP Cody Dube, 21, Keene State (NH), 6-1, 198
