BALTIMORE—Right-hander Ryan Helsley, who last pitched on June 27th and is on the 60-day injured list with a right elbow injury, threw 24 pitches in his first live batting practice on Tuesday.
“He threw all of his pitches. He looked great,” manager Craig Albernaz said. “Velo was there. He was 95 to upper 90s, throwing strikes. The biggest thing was he threw all of his pitches. He looked great out there.’
Albernaz isn’t sure what the next step is for Helsley, who has pitched in just 17 games this season because of two lengthy stints on the injured list.
“We’re talking through that now,” Albernaz said. “How he wakes up tomorrow, how he feels. That’s going to be predicated on the next steps. We’re getting a bunch of different plans in place and variables.”
Outfielder Luis Robert Jr., who’s on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring injury, will remain with the Orioles rather than report to Sarasota as was the original plan.
Cowser is catch of the week
Centerfielder Colton Cowser’s marvelous game-saving catch on August 31st earned him “Catch of the Week” honors.
Cowser’s catch was the 16th by an Orioles fielder, most since the award began in 2018. Cedric Mullins won eight of them, and Tuesday’s starter, Brandon Young, was cited for his “hacky sack” play on July 20th.
Notes: The 11 players with a save is a franchise record. … Left-hander Josh Walker hasn’t allowed a run in 14 games since August 6th. That’s the longest streak since Félix Bautista’s 14 games from June 25th-August 6th, 2023.
