BALTIMORE—The second and final day of Major League Baseball’s amateur draft has begun. The Orioles’ first selection in the fifth round was shortstop Jimmy Anderson from Heartland Community College in Heartland, Kansas.
Anderson was drafted by the Orioles in the 19th round last year but didn’t sign.
In 59 games, Anderson hit .465 with an OPS of 1.574, 26 home runs and 88 RBIs.
He’s from Joliet, Illinois, also the hometown of outfielder Nate George, the team’s top-ranked prospect on MLB Pipeline, who is out with an illness.
Left-handed pitcher Zane Adams from the University of Alabama was their sixth-round selection. Adams was 8-5 with a 4.58 ERA in 17 starts. He allowed 97 hits in 90 1/3 innings. He struck out 100 and walked 30.
Adams has a four-pitch mix and his best pitch is a changeup.
The 20-round draft concludes Sunday evening.
Notes: The Orioles haven’t announced their starters for the first series after the All-Star break. They play at Houston next weekend. …The Orioles have won three games in a row eight times but have lost in their previous seven attempts
