Orioles activate Rutschman, Beavers, option Jackson to Norfolk, designate Huff for assignment

BALTIMORE—The Orioles reinstated catcher Adley Rutschman from the 7-day concussion injured list and outfielder Dylan Beavers, who’d been on the 10-day injured list with a strained right oblique muscle. Both are in the lineup for Sunday’s game against the Washington Nationals.

The Orioles optioned utility player Jeremiah Jackson to Triple-A Norfolk and designated catcher Sam Huff for assignment.

Jackson has been playing less since the return of second baseman Jackson Holliday from the injured list. He hit .251 with a .664 OPS, seven home runs and 32 RBIs. Jackson struck out 10 times more often than he walked, 40-4.

Huff hit .174 with an RBI in nine games.

Rutschman is hitting .254 with a .787 OPS, eight home runs and 40 RBIs. Beavers is hitting .243 with a .699 OPS, two home runs and 12 RBIs.

“Adley’s a stabilizer,” assistant hitting coach Brady North said. “We’ve seen how good this team is when Adley’s in there daily, and you can see when his absence was felt, when he was not in there, so we’re very excited to have him back, and Beavers, very similar, a stabilizer, good at-bats constantly, good enough contact consistently. Really excited to get him back in the lineup.”

Beavers was with the team on Saturday, when it lost, 4-3, in 10 innings, and is eager to return.

“It hasn’t been fun,” Beavers said. “I haven’t enjoyed it. Watching the guys every night, I wish I could have been there the whole time, but it’s motivation to show up and take care of business and try and make sure I’m healthy as soon as possible.”

The Orioles still have three catchers on their roster. Chadwick Tromp, who caught on Saturday night, remains.

Notes: Samuel Basallo will start at first base for the first time this season. Shane Baz and Trey Gibson will start for the Orioles against the Chicago White Sox. The Orioles haven’t listed a starter for Wednesday, but it’s expected to be Dean Kremer, who’ll be activated off the 60-day injured list.
