Orioles’ Rutschman placed on 7-day concussion injured list; Outfielder Michael Siani recalled

LOS ANGELES—After getting hit in the head running to first base in the ninth inning of Thursday’s game in Seattle, catcher Adley Rutschman is headed to the 7-day concussion injured list. The move will be retroactive to Friday.

“It obviously sucks for Adley,” manager Craig Albernaz said. “Especially for concussions and head injuries, it’s tough, and especially the position he plays and the constant foul tips, balls in the dirt, backswings. We’ll take it day-by-day, see where he’s at.”

It will be the second injured list stint for Rutschman this season. He was on the IL for 10 days in April with left ankle inflammation.

“It is disappointing for Adley,” Albernaz said. “When an injury like that happens, it’s nothing the team can do. It was such a freak incident.”

Rutschman is hitting .254 with a .787 OPS, eight home runs and 40 RBIs.

Sam Huff, who was already on the 26-man roster, will be the backup catcher and outfielder Michael Siani was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk.

Siani, who was claimed off waivers from the Dodgers on May 18th, has 160 games of major league experience with Cincinnati and St. Louis from 2022-2025. He hit .221 with two home runs and 20 RBIs. In 19 games with Norfolk, Siani was hitting .109 with a home run and four RBIs.

“He’s an elite defender out in the outfield,” Albernaz said of Siani. “He has way above-average speed, and he manages the bat really well.”

Huff is batting .222 (2-for-9) with an RBI in seven games.

“His calling card as a minor league prospect was his power,” Albernaz said. “He’s really turned himself into a really good major league catcher.”

The Orioles added catcher Chadwick Tromp and right-hander Cameron Weston to the taxi squad.
