The Orioles hope that catcher Samuel Basallo can avoid the injured list after leaving Friday night’s game in Toronto with right abdominal discomfort. Basallo is still being evaluated, and in the meantime, the Orioles added catcher Sam Huff.
Huff’s contract was purchased from Triple-A Norfolk, and he gives the team another catcher behind Adley Rutschman while Basallo recovers.
It’s the second stint this season for Huff, who was 2-for-9 (.222) with an RBI in three games. Huff was with the team when Adley Rutschman was on the injured list with left ankle inflammation.
To make room for Huff, the Orioles designated utility player Weston Wilson for assignment. Wilson was hitting .231 with a home run and three RBIs and a .691 OPS in 19 games.
On Friday, manager Craig Albernaz told reporters in Toronto that right-hander Dean Kremer who’s on the 60-day injured list with a strained right quad threw live batting practice earlier this week in Sarasota and is progressing well.
Outfielder Dylan Beavers, who’s on the 10-day list with a strained right oblique is hitting in Sarasota and remains on schedule.
Chris Bassitt, whose back was examined in Baltimore, returned to the team on Friday. His next scheduled start is on Monday.
