Wolfram reactivated, serving as the 27th man for doubleheader; Mayo scratched with lower back discomfort;Orioles-Tigers 1st game lineups

BALTIMORE—The Orioles reinstated left-hander Grant Wolfram from the 15-day injured list to serve as the 27th man for the doubleheader with the Detroit Tigers.

Wolfram had a lower back injury. He got sick on May 7th when the Orioles were in Miami, and after a day away because of illness, he returned and tried to warm up in the bullpen and felt his back tighten.

“I tried to throw, and it got worse,” he said. “I got some meds and went out to the game, said I was good and warmed up in the seventh, and it got really tight. It got to a point where I had to change my mechanics.”

He had to stop throwing for a few days, and felt better, but not good enough to remain active, so he went to the injured list.

“I think it was a smart move, the right move, glad to be back,” Wolfram said.

Wolfram didn’t have a rehab assignment, but did throw to hitters in Sarasota on Thursday.

He faced recently signed Tommy Pham.

“Got some feedback from him and some of the other hitters, too,” Wolfram said. “He looked good. He looked solid. Put a lot of good swings on me, got a couple of outs on him, too. About everything you’d expect. He’s played over 10 years in The Show. He has a good approach.”

Even though Wolfram is the 27th man, he doesn’t have to be optioned to Triple-A Norfolk after the doubleheader.

Notes: Coby Mayo was scratched with lower back discomfort. Weston Wilson will play third base instead. …The Orioles haven’t announced their starters for their series against the Tampa Bay Rays, which begins with a Monday game at 1:35 p.m. Shane McClanahan (5-7, 2.82) pitches for Tampa Bay.
