BALTIMORE—The Orioles haven’t named their starters for the series with the New York Yankees that begins Monday night. One of the starters could be Trevor Rogers, who’s on the 15-day injured list because of illness and is eligible to return on Monday.
“I feel great. Everything’s where it needs to be,” Rogers said. “My body feels really good.”
Rogers last pitched on April 25th when he lasted only 1 2/3 innings against the Boston Red Sox. He allowed three runs on four hits in an eventual 17-1 loss.
He threw in the bullpen on Saturday and isn’t likely to need a rehab assignment. A start against the Yankees is more likely.
“I think there’s a possibility,” he said. “I talked with the coaching staff and go forward from that.”
Rogers thinks he let the team down, but he had a bad case of the flu.
“Not being there for the guys going through a big stretch of games sucks,” he said. “I knew that I got sick and I knew I was pitching two days later, there would have been no way that I would have been able to do my job the way I wanted to.”
The 28-year-old left-hander started the season well but has had three rough starts in succession.
He’s 2-3 with a 4.75 ERA.
“I’m just happy to get back with the guys and compete for them and try to help them win games,” he said.
The Yankees, who swept four games from the Orioles last weekend, will start left-hander Ryan Weathers on Monday, right-hander Will Warren on Tuesday and left-hander Max Fried on Wednesday.
Espada in, Trivino out
The Orioles recalled right-hander Jose Espada from Triple-A Norfolk and designated right-hander Lou Trivino for assignment.
Espada pitched a scoreless inning, allowing two hits as the 27th man in the first day of a doubleheader on April 30th.
Trivino allowed six runs in three innings in two games for an 18.00 ERA.
Akin opening for Orioles
The Orioles will start left-hander Keegan Akin on Sunday against the Oakland Athletics, who have won the first two games of a three-game series. Right-hander Chris Bassitt was scheduled to start and might be coming in behind Akin, who opened three times last season.
