Should Orioles sign Lucas Giolito? | MAILBAG

Question: Zach Eflin is down. Chris Bassitt might be Charlie Morton 2.0. Dean Kremer is doing April Kremer things. I see that Lucas Giolito is still out there in free agency. Is there a reason he has yet to sign?  Would it be a prudent for the Orioles to sign him? I can’t imagine it would break the bank to get him for this year and a mutual option for 2027. From: Regular Ed, Timonium, Maryland

Answer: Ed, I’m not sure if the Orioles are interested in Giolito, who has attracted interest from the Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres, according to recent reports. The reports say that he’s ramping up his workouts and it wouldn’t take him long to get in game shape.

I don’t know what he’s asking for, but I think the Orioles think that with Cade Povich, Brandon Young, both of whom have pitched well this month, and a cadre of young pitchers at Norfolk, they’re well prepared, although that can always change.

Question: Say there’s a runner attempting to steal second base, and the batter takes the pitch that’s called a ball. Does the catcher have to tap his helmet under two seconds to challenge the ball call if he’s throwing to second to get the runner out? In this scenario, the pitcher didn’t think to challenge the ball call. From: Timothy Morris, Butchers Hill

Answer: Timothy, in the case of a steal play, catchers can ask for a review after the conclusion of the steal attempt.

Most weekdays, I’ll be answering at least one Orioles question. If you’d like to submit a question, send it to: [email protected]. Questions may be edited for clarity, length and style.
