BALTIMORE—Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman was placed on the 10-day injured list because of left ankle inflammation just before Saturday night’s O’s-Giants game.
Ryan Mountcastle, who moved into the lineup as the designated hitter when Samuel Basallo moved from DH to catcher, had to leave Saturday night’s game in the second inning because of left foot soreness. He appeared to hurt the foot when he was running between first and second on a double.
Rutschman had three hits in Friday night’s game and is hitting .294 with three RBIs.
The Orioles selected the contract of catcher Maverick Handley from Double-A Chesapeake. Handley, who hit .073 with three RBIs in 16 games last season, had played one game for the Baysox and one with Triple-A Norfolk this season.
He accompanied the Orioles on their road trip to Pittsburgh and Chicago this week.
Right-handed pitcher Chayce McDermott was designated for assignment to make room for Handley.
Among the early-season injuries for the Orioles are: Rutschman, Mountcastle, Jordan Westburg, Jackson Holliday, Zach Eflin, Heston Kjerstad, Andrew Kittredge, Keegan Akin, Dietrich Enns, Yaramil Hiraldo and Colin Selby.
