Question: I was so high on Samuel Basallo when he was in the minors. Since signing the big contract, he seems different.  I hope I’m wrong, but he looks like he is going through the motions. Not leading like a catcher should, and sure as heck doesn’t look like he is having fun. What do you think? From: Sandra Freund

Answer: Sandra, remember that Basallo is 21, and he’s in a very unusual situation. Players rarely sign long-term contracts at that age, and I think in some ways, he’s trying to live up to the contract.

I am troubled by his not running out ground balls and think that’s a really bad look.

The long-term contract was an investment, and I think it will be a good one for the Orioles. I think Basallo will have to grow into his role, and the growth might not be immediate.

Question: What is the realistic place for Ike Irish to begin the 2026 season and what primary position do you see the Orioles looking to develop? I’ve tracked the best I can in spring training and have seen a handful of late-inning participation taking advantage of his at bats going 4-for-4.  What has he looked like in non-game activity and does it appear the Orioles are pleased with their No. 1 pick? Answer: Greg, you are correct that Irish is 4-for-4. I’m guessing for now he’ll be a catcher. There are already seven catchers on the roster, so when he comes into the late innings of games, he’s put in the outfield.

I haven’t seen him in non-game activity, but I think the Orioles are pleased with his progress. Irish has played only 20 professional games.
