Akin goes to Orioles’ growing injured list; Cano recalled, Martin’s contract purchased, Bowman designated for assignment

The Orioles’ injured list continues to get longer and longer. On Wednesday, the Orioles added left-handed pitcher Keegan Akin to the 15-day injured list, retroactive to Tuesday, with left shoulder inflammation.

Akin, one of just two left-handers in the bullpen, was having a good season with a 3-0 record and a 3.32 ERA in 39 games.

The Orioles have 14 players on the injured list. They’ve made at least one transaction each day since June 21st.

Without Akin on the active roster, the Orioles have only one left-hander, Gregory Soto, in the bullpen.

The Orioles recalled right-hander Yennier Cano, who was sent to Triple-A Norfolk on June 22nd. Cano was 1-4 with a 4.73 ERA in 32 games and had a 4.50 ERA in two games for Norfolk.

Right-hander Corbin Martin’s contract was purchased from Norfolk. Martin was 2-2 with a 5.29 ERA and one save in 29 games for the Tides. In 17 games with Houston and Arizona in 2019, 2021 and 2022, Martin was 1-5 with a 6.71 ERA.

The Orioles designated right-hander Matt Bowman for assignment. Bowman, who allowed four runs on six hits in 1 1/3 innings in the Orioles’ 10-2 loss to Texas on Tuesday night, was 0-1 with a 5.79 ERA in 19 games.

Notes: The Orioles signed infielder/outfielder Jose Barrero to a minor league contract. Barrero hit .138 for St. Louis with a home run and three RBIs in 22 games this season. He played from 2020-2023 for Cincinnati and has a .182 average in 161 major league games. … Right-hander Keagan Gillies, who was named to the American League Futures Team on Monday, was promoted from Double-A Chesapeake to Norfolk.
