BALTIMORE–Orioles catcher Maverick Handley, who was injured in a violent collision with the New York Yankees’ Jazz Chisholm on Sunday, has been placed on the 7-day concussion injured list. Handley left the game in the second inning and was replaced by Gary Sánchez.
Chisholm was trying to score on a base hit by DJ LeMahieu. Orioles leftfielder Colton Cowser made a strong throw home, but it was up the third base line. Chisholm and the ball arrived at the same time, and Handley was spun around in a scary collision.
To replace Handley, the Orioles purchased the contract of catcher Chadwick Tromp from Triple-A Norfolk. They also transferred first baseman Ryan Mountcastle from the 10-day to 60-day injured list to make room for Tromp on the 40-man roster. Mountcastle is out with a serious hamstring injury.
Handley was hitting .073 (3-for-41) with three RBIs. He had been recalled from Norfolk when catcher Adley Rutschman went on the injured list with a strained left oblique. Tromp was with the Orioles briefly last month and was hitless in four at-bats.
