BALTIMORE—Moments before game time, the Orioles placed infielder/outfielder Jorge Mateo on the 10-day injured list with left elbow inflammation. The move is retroactive to Saturday.
On May 31st, Mateo, who was playing center field, collided with rightfielder Heston Kjerstad. His MRI found no structural damage. There is no timetable for his return.
Mateo collided with Gunnar Henderson last July in Miami, and he had season-ending Tommy John surgery in August.
To replace Mateo on the active roster, the Orioles purchased the contract of infielder Luis Vázquez, who was impressive during spring training. Vázquez was hitting .280 with a .792 OPS, five home runs and 20 RBIs for Norfolk.
Vázquez was 1-for-12 (.083) in 11 games for the Chicago Cubs last season. The Orioles purchased Vázquez from the Cubs on January 31st.
Right-handed pitcher Matt Bowman, who was designated for assignment on Sunday, cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to Norfolk.
