BALTIMORE—Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman isn’t in the lineup for Tuesday night’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals, but interim manager Tony Mansolino said that he could return soon. If the Orioles take batting practice before the game, Mansolino said Rutschman will participate.
Rutschman hasn’t played since leaving Sunday’s game in Boston after he was hit on the mask with a foul ball. Rutschman was struck by a foul tip off the bat of Boston’s Rafael Devers in the third inning but didn’t leave until the fifth. The Orioles have been monitoring him since then.
“Moving around, taking BP, you’ll see him on the field,” Mansolino said before the game. “If all goes well, I think there’s a good chance we’ll see him pretty soon.”
Centerfielder Cedric Mullins is out for the second straight game. He didn’t play in Saturday night’s second game, either.
“Just trying to give him a couple of days,” Mansolino said. “The day games, the doubleheader, it beat him up. In the past, as he’s gotten worn down in previous seasons, it hasn’t gone well for him, so we’re just trying to protect against that. He’ll likely be available tonight if we need him.”
Chadwick Tromp will catch for the Orioles on Tuesday night. Tromp’s contract was purchased before Monday’s game, but he didn’t play.
Tromp has played 61 games in the major leagues with San Francisco and Atlanta from 2020-2025.
“I’ve seen him for afar over the years,” Mansolino said. “I had his cousin in the minor leagues at one point, too … He’s a guy that [pitching coach Drew French] really likes. Frenchy had an experience with him in Atlanta, He has a lot of good things to say about him, so excited to see him back there.”
Notes: Infielder/outfielder Terrin Vavra, who was designated for assignment on Sunday, cleared outright waivers and accepted an assignment to Triple-A Norfolk. … Before the game, there will be a moment of silence for Jim Henneman, the longtime Baltimore baseball writer and the team’s official scorer, who died on Thursday night at 89.
