BOSTON-Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman left Sunday’s game against the Red Sox at Fenway Park after taking a foul tip off the mask during Rafael Devers’ third inning at-bat.

Rutschman appeared shaken up by the blow, but no one from the Orioles’ staff came out to check on him, and he remained in the game.

“Just took medical precaution. We’re just going to monitor and evaluate over the next 24 hours, and we’ll go from there,” interim manager Tony Mansolino said after the Orioles’ 5-1 win over the Red Sox. “As we kind of saw it play out, we have a great medical team. They were on him immediately, and we have [bench coach Robinson] Chirinos, too, who lived it himself. They were communicating with him immediately. The communication was great. Once [head athletic trainer] Scotty [Barringer] felt like there was a need to take him out as a precaution, we did it immediately.”

Rutschman stayed in the game until Maverick Handley pinch-hit for him in the fifth inning. Handley took over behind the plate in the bottom of the fifth.

Rutschman has never been on the injured list since coming to the Orioles in May 2022.

Besides Handley, the Orioles have newly acquired Cooper Hummel, who’s played 18 games in the major leagues at catcher. Rutschman’s backup catcher, Gary Sánchez, is out indefinitely with a right wrist injury.
