The Orioles are expected to start right-hander Chayce McDermott on Tuesday night in Milwaukee. McDermott joined the Orioles’ taxi squad on Monday.
McDermott started the second game of Wednesday’s doubleheader against Minnesota last Wednesday, allowing four runs on four hits in three innings.
When the Orioles designated veteran right-hander Kyle Gibson for assignment, it created an opening in the rotation, and it’s possible the 26-year-old right-hander will get his first extended major league opportunity.
McDermott had one start last season at Miami, when he allowed three runs on five hits in four innings.
If McDermott is added to the 26-man roster, a pitcher must be cut. Right-handed reliever Kade Strowd, who made his debut on Sunday, seems the most likely player to be cut.
Notes: Interim manager Tony Mansolino told reporters in Milwaukee that catcher Adley Rutschman has a planned day off. Maverick Handley will catch on Monday night against the Brewers …Dylan Carlson is starting in left field. The switch-hitter is hitless in 15 at-bats this season.
