Orioles lose 6th straight as Eflin allows 4 homers in 10-4 loss to Nationals

BALTIMORE–What happened? Tony Mansolino had a rough time sleeping after his first game as Orioles interim manager.

“When my bedroom’s messy, I have a hard time sleeping, any type of clutter. The clutter between my ears definitely kept me up,” he said.

Mansolino’s second game wasn’t any easier than his first. The 10-4 loss to the Washington Nationals before 37,264 at Camden Yards was the Orioles’ sixth straight, and eight straight at home.

The Orioles (15-30) are on a pace to lose 108 games, and there’s no sign of this slide ending — a slide that resulted in the firing of Brandon Hyde on Saturday.

“It takes just one good month to get that going,” shortstop Gunnar Henderson said. “It starts with one win, get one win and see what happens. I feel that’s what we need to think about. Just really try to do, get one and see what happens after.”

Mansolino is in an impossible position. He’s learning on the job while trying to win games with a team that has forgotten how to. The new manager hasn’t gotten used to his new title.

“It’s hard to do that. I don’t think that’s going to come any time soon,” he said. “I think right now, it’s time to get up to speed, try to connect with everybody. This is very difficult. I had a nice little silo that I worked in [as a coach], and it was comfortable. This is about as uncomfortable as it gets right now.”

Oriole starter Zach Eflin (3-2) equaled career highs by allowing eight runs and four home runs in 5 1/3 innings.

C.J. Abrams homered twice, on the game’s first pitch, and as part of a six-run second inning. Dylan Crews hit a three-run home run moments before Abrams’. Luis Garcia also homered.

Michael Soroka (1-2) allowed Cedric Mullins’ ninth home run in the fifth, Henderson’s seventh to start the sixth, and an RBI double to Mullins in 5 2/3 innings.

Jackson Holliday hit his sixth home run in the seventh.

Before the game, outfielder Tyler O’Neill went on the 10-day injured list for the second time this season, and the 16th time in his career. O’Neill, who had neck inflammation in his first stint on the IL, has a left shoulder impingement. Outfielder Dylan Carlson was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk.

After four awful starts, Kyle Gibson was designated for assignment. The Orioles haven’t ruled out a return to the organization for Gibson, who had a 16.78 ERA.

Kade Strowd was recalled from Norfolk and allowed a run on two hits in his major league debut in the ninth.

How did Eflin throw? Eflin allowed eight runs on 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings.

“A couple balls caught the middle part of the plate,” Mansolino said. “They hit a couple balls hard — you’ve got to give those guys credit. But I also think if you kind of look at some of how hard they hit the ball and what the trajectory of it was, I think the wind probably helped some of the balls, right?

“So, it’s just a tough day. Hanging in that game as long as he did and kind of helping us in the way that he did was probably more the story for me than a couple balls that probably weren’t hit that great that got out. So, Ef actually hung in there. Did a great job today.”

This was Eflin’s second game since returning from the injured list, and after a short start from Gibson on Saturday, the Orioles needed innings from their starter.

“It comes to a point in the second inning where you go like, ‘How many innings can I suck up?’” Eflin said. “Understand we threw a lot of arms yesterday, and there’s a need for me to go deep today. I didn’t necessarily do that. I was able to go as long as I could, but that wasn’t obviously the plan going in — plan was to go deeper, less runs, keep the guys in the game. Just frustrating.”

What’s the clubhouse like? Henderson said that the Orioles will keep trying, no matter what the odds are.

“I wouldn’t say that everybody went out and was the same,” he said. “It was definitely tough, but I think everybody knew what we needed to do, go out there and play baseball. You play for your teammates in here and play for the fans out there. They’re coming into the ballpark and supporting you. That’s the biggest thing, just going out there and playing for the guys beside you.”

In 2022, Eflin was on a World Series team, the Philadelphia Phillies, and he’s hoping the Orioles can somehow get better.

“We’re here to win baseball games, and we’re not winning baseball games,” Eflin said. “It’s hard to go much deeper than that when the goal is to win the game when we’re not winning the game right now. I didn’t help that today. We’re going to maintain that mindset of showing up every day prepared and ready to go, having each other’s backs and ready for this thing to turn around.”

What does it mean? The Orioles obviously need to play much better on a seven-game road trip to Milwaukee and Boston after losing all six games this week against Minnesota and Washington.

“We love playing here,” Mansolino said. “We love being home in Baltimore. This is a great yard. We love playing for our fans, who are passionate. But I do think any time you go on the road, the group shrinks and tightens. So, whether you’ve won 10 in a row at home or not, we all do like going on the road and kind of tightening up the environment.”

What’s the word? “I don’t think there’s really any words I can tell you. It’s frustrating, it sucks. Losing is not fun by any means. We’re not necessarily having fun right now. We want to go out and win every single game that we play, and it’s just not happening right now. Don’t really have much more to elaborate on that.”-Eflin on the Orioles’ struggle

What’s the stat of the day? Ryan Mountcastle has a 12-game hitting streak.

What’s going on in the minor leagues? Third baseman Coby Mayo homered and Triple-A Norfolk scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to beat Jacksonville, 6-5.

Braxton Bragg allowed two hits in five scoreless innings as Double-A Chesapeake beat Akron, 10-1. Designated hitter Creed Willems hit a three-run home run. Third baseman Jeremiah Jackson hit a two-run homer and drove in three.

Third baseman Anderson De Los Santos and leftfielder Jalen Vasquez homered in High-A Aberdeen’s 3-2 loss to Hudson Valley.

Fredericksburg beat Single-A Delmarva, 7-2.

What’s next? The Orioles begin a three-game series in Milwaukee on Monday night at 7:40. Dean Kremer (3-5, 5.36) will start against Quinn Priester (1-2, 4.59).
