Orioles fire Brandon Hyde; Tony Mansolino to serve as interim manager

BALTIMORE—After beginning the season with a 15-28 record, the Orioles fired manager Brandon Hyde on Saturday.

Third base coach Tony Mansolino will serve as interim manager. Mansolino has been the third base coach since 2021.

“As the head of baseball operations, the poor start to our season is ultimately my responsibility,” Orioles executive vice president/general manager Mike Elias said in a statement.

“Part of that responsibility is pursuing difficult changes in order to set a different course for the future. I want to thank Brandon for his hard work, dedication, and passion all these years, and for returning the team to the playoffs and winning an AL East championship. His many positive contributions to this organization and to Baltimore will remain, and we wish he and his family the best.”

Hyde had managed the Orioles since 2019 and had a 421-492 record. The Orioles lost 108 games in 2019, 110 in 2021, and made a surprising run for the postseason in 2022 with an 83-79 record. The Orioles won the American League East in 2023 with 101 wins, and Hyde was voted American League Manager of the Year. The Orioles were swept by Texas in the AL Division Series

In 2024, the Orioles were 91-71 and lost a two-game Wild Card Series to Kansas City.

This season, the Orioles were widely predicted to make a third straight playoff appearance but have underperformed in every major category.

“Brandon Hyde is someone I have come to know and deeply admire, not  only for his extensive knowledge of baseball, but also for his exceptional leadership as a manager,” said Orioles owner David Rubenstein in a statement. “I am sincerely grateful for his significant accomplishments over the past six years, which have greatly benefited both the Orioles and the city of Baltimore.

“However, as is sometimes the case in baseball, change becomes necessary, and we believe this is one of those moments. The Orioles’ organization is truly appreciative of everything Brandon has contributed during his tenure, and we wish him nothing but success in whatever path he chooses next in the world of baseball.

“Brandon is a man of great character, and we thank him for his dedication and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”

Longtime Hyde associate Tim Cossins, the team’s major league field coordinatior/coaching instructor, was also fired. Cossins came to the Orioles with Hyde in 2018.

“We thank Tim for his tremendous contributions to the organization over the years,” Elias said.

Hyde is the fourth winningest Orioles manager behind Earl Weaver, Buck Showalter and Paul Richards.

This is the first in-season Orioles managerial change since June 2010 when Dave Trembley was fired.
