Orioles’ Rodriguez diagnosed with ‘mild lat strain’; Hyde trying to stay optimistic

WASHINGTON—The Orioles sent starting pitcher Grayson Rodriguez for additional opinions, and manager Brandon Hyde announced that the diagnosis is “a mild lat strain.”

Hyde said that the 25-year-old right-hander “has improved quite a bit in the last week, symptom-free right now. He should start throwing in a couple of weeks.”

Rodriguez has not pitched since March 5th against Minnesota in Fort Myers, and he was placed on the 15-day injured list on March 24th.

Hyde was asked if he was optimistic about Rodriguez’s latest diagnosis. Since he’s been out, he’s been diagnosed with injuries to his elbow, triceps and shoulder. Now, it’s his lat.

“I’m trying to stay optimistic,” Hyde said. “He’s had a tough time staying healthy the last few years. “

In 2024, Rodriguez was on the injured list twice, with shoulder and lat injuries. He didn’t pitch the last two months of the season.

“We were hoping that he starts throwing in a couple of weeks and in his progression, he stays healthy,” Hyde said. “Let’s get him back on the mound. Let’s get him playing catch again, and we’ll go from there.”

Hyde said that starting pitcher Zach Eflin, who’s also on the injured list with a right lat strain, is improving.

“He is off the mound Friday or Saturday, so he’s going to be throwing a side [session] late this week,” he said.

Hyde said that Brandon Young would start Friday in Detroit. There’s been no decision on when Kyle Gibson will pitch again.

Trevor Rogers, who is on the 15-day injured list with a dislocated right kneecap, made his season debut for Double-A Chesapeake. He allowed two runs on four hits, walked one and struck out three. He threw 44 pitches in 3 innings.
