BALTIMORE—Pitcher Keegan Akin was placed on the 15-day injured list with left elbow discomfort before Monday night’s game, and Orioles manager Craig Albernaz said that the 31-year-old left-hander would be getting an MRI.
“The medical team will look it over and figure it out,” Albernaz said. “He mentioned something in the training room, I believe, after the pitcher’s throwing. Doing the test and talking with the medical staff and team, it was decided to go the IL route, even though it was really late.”
The Orioles recalled left-hander Josh Walker from Triple-A Norfolk.
Akin, who missed the first month of the season with a left groin muscle strain, has appeared in 24 games with an 0-1 record and a 5.68 ERA.
The Orioles have five pitchers who’ve pitched in more games — Rico Garcia (38), Yennier Cano (37), Anthony Nunez (32), Grant Wolfram (31), and Tyler Wells (29). Nunez is currently at Norfolk.
None of the Orioles is among the top 10 in the American League for most appearances and neither Garcia nor Cano are on pace to threaten Jamie Walker’s club record of 81 appearances in 2007.
Cano, who appeared in 72 games in 2023 and 70 in 2024, was the last Oriole reliever to pitch in 70.
Albernaz said he tries not to overwork relievers.
“Always mindful of that, always mindful of the total number of pitches thrown,” he said. “We’ve never had anyone go three in a row, so we’re very mindful of that.”
Albernaz, pitching coach Drew French and bullpen coach Hank Conger watch the workload.
“The backbone of any team, the bullpen, and our guys have stepped up in a big way,” Albernaz said. “Being able to be cognitive of their work a little bit, not overusing. That’s a big, big part of everything … They’re the unsung heroes of any team.”
Scoring change
The scoring on the controversial play in the 10th inning of the June 24th loss to the Los Angeles Angels has been changed. Originally, Nolan Schanuel reached on what was ruled a three-base error on Akin, who fumbled the ball before Schanuel kicked it into right field.
Schanuel has now been credited with an RBI single, and second baseman Jeremiah Jackson charged with a two-base throwing error. Jackson did a soft underhand toss to first, trying to time his throw with Akin’s arrival. The toss was low, and Akin didn’t catch it as he crossed the bag. First baseman Pete Alonso added to the confusion when he broke toward second on the ground ball that Jackson had covered and couldn’t get back to the bag in time for the throw, forcing Akin to make the play.
Note: Norfolk outfielder Jud Fabian is being placed on the 7-day concussion injured list.
