Albernaz thinks Mayo can avoid injured list; Orioles-Rays lineups

BALTIMORE—Coby Mayo isn’t in the Orioles’ lineup for the third straight game. Mayo was scratched from Sunday’s Game 1 lineup with lower back discomfort. Manager Craig Albernaz thinks he’ll be able to avoid the injured list and says Mayo is improving.

“It seems like it’s manageable, not too sure. It all depends on how it responds,” Albernaz said.

The Orioles brought outfielder Michael Siani in for the taxi squad. Siani was claimed off waivers by the Orioles from the Los Angeles Dodgers on May 18th.

Siani played 160 games with Cincinnati and St. Louis from 2022-2025.

“I’m known to be able to go out and get it in the outfield,” Siani said. “Play defense, run the bases and put together some good at-bats, just competitive play hard, feel like that fits in with this team.”

Siani is a distant cousin of the former Oakland Raiders and Baltimore Colts receiver Mike Siani.

The two Sianis met for the first time a few months back.

Catcher Sam Huff is also here on the taxi squad.

Jackson Holliday is starting at second base against left-hander Shane McClanahan. He played third base in the eighth and ninth.

Infield coach Miguel Cairo has been working with Holliday to learn third.

“It’s been good, just normal getting used to a different position,” Cairo said. “It’s going to take a lot of work. It’s going to take time. He hasn’t played third base before. He’s an athlete, he’s moving his feet really good. He knows how to catch a ball. He’s just getting used to the position, positioning situation of the game and all that stuff.

“Third base is more like a reaction position. It’s one step, dive to the left, one step dive to the right, short hop, long hop, drop step. You’ve just got to be ready for those. It’s when you’ve got to get that short hop or back off and get the long hop. He’s been getting used to it. He’s been working really hard on it and we’re going to keep working.”
