BALTIMORE—Trevor Rogers is returning to start Tuesday night’s game against the Yankees, and Orioles manager Craig Albernaz will keep a close eye on him.
Rogers, who was on the injured list because of illness, is starting for the first time since April 25th when he allowed three runs on four hits in 1 2/3 innings in an eventual 17-1 loss to the Boston Red Sox.
“We’re not going to be reckless with him,” Albernaz said. “We’re not going to expect him to go out and throw 120 pitches. After being sick and being on the IL, it’s going to be close monitoring, see how he’s navigating the innings, the pitch count of each inning, the stress of the inning.”
Albernaz said he and pitching coach Drew French will be talking to each other and to “Raj as well to see how he’s feeling.”
Samuel Basallo, who was scratched from Monday night’s game with left knee discomfort he suffered as a result of the home plate collision with the Athletics’ Carlos Cortes on Sunday, is the designated hitter.
Dylan Beavers was scratched from Tuesday night’s lineup because of right oblique discomfort. Colton Cowser will replace him in center field
Wells recalled as Wolfram goes to injured list
Left-hander Grant Wolfram was placed on the 15-day injured list with a lower back strain. The move is retroactive to May 9th. Wolfram is 1-1 with a 4.85 ERA. He has struck out 20 batters and walked one and not allowed a home run.
Tyler Wells, who had been optioned to Triple-A Norfolk on May 2nd, was recalled. He was 0-1 with a 3.44 ERA in 14 games with the Orioles and allowed a run on two hits in 1 1/3 innings in his only appearance for the Tides.
Orioles-Yankees Wednesday game rescheduled
Wednesday’s game between the Orioles and Yankees, originally scheduled for 6:35 p.m., has been moved to 1:05 p.m. due to an unfavorable weather forecast.
Ward’s batting eye
Taylor Ward begins the game in an 0-for-17 skid, but he’s walked 11 times.
“Every at-bat, he’s locked in, competing,” Albernaz said. “There’s a lot of stuff that stands out, his walk rate, his chase rate is extremely low, his three-ball chase is miniscule.
“He knows what pitches he wants to hunt and where he’s looking, and he’s stubborn and disciplined [in] his takes. That’s really tough for hitters to do is stay stubborn to their approach and not get swayed by the result of the pitcher, whether it be a strike or not.
“Taylor’s done a great job of just staying in the strike zone and not chasing. It’s been fun to watch … Every hitter across the game should watch his at-bats. I feel like every at-bat he’s in is either a 2-2 or 3-2 count. It’s extremely impressive just the way he manages the at-bat every single time. He’s unemotional about the previous at-bat. He’s unemotional if he takes a bad swing during the at-bat. If he takes a called strike, he just sticks to his process and his approach. It’s something that extremely hard to do.”
