Question: In as much it appears that Zach Eflin’s injury may put him out of commission for an extended period of time, wouldn’t it seem that they sign somebody quickly like Lucas Gioloto or any other free agents? From: Gene Rene
Answer: Gene, I think that Dean Kremer, who’s not eligible to return until April 9th unless he’s replacing another pitcher on the injured list, will be the next starter recalled. They also have Cade Povich and Brandon Young, who have major league experience at Norfolk, but I suppose Giolito could make sense.
If they signed Giolito, he’d need to go through an entire spring training and wouldn’t be ready to pitch for six weeks, He’s by far the best free agent available.
They also could look to the trade market, but there usually aren’t many major trades made this early in the season.
For later in the season, they have several good prospects at Norfolk — Nestor German, Trey Gibson and Levi Wells — but the Orioles would like to see them have success there before they call them up.
Question: I know it’s way too early and I love Gunnar Henderson but if his errors start adding up, would they consider a move to third with Jackson Holliday at short and Jordan Westburg at second? From: Davo
Answer: Davo, I don’t see that happening. Westburg, who has a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, is now on the 60-day injured list and won’t be able to play until May 21st. Perhaps the issue with Henderson is that because of his commitment to the World Baseball Classic, he didn’t get enough fundamental work during spring training.
In 2013, Adam Jones, who was an exceptional centerfielder ,had a rough start that could be attributed to his lack of fundamental work because of the WBC.
I think Henderson will be fine at shortstop, and if Westburg comes back and Holliday improves at second, the infield would be stronger at those positions rather than moving all three.
