Question: Can you project the number of games for Samuel Basallo vs. Adley Rutschman in 2026? From: Charles Luck
Answer: Charles, if both Basallo and Rutschman stay healthy in 2026, I’ll guess that Rutschman starts 105 games and Basallo 57 as catcher.
In 2023, Rutschman started 110 games, and in 2024, he started 103. I’ll guess it’s somewhere in the middle.
It’s possible that the Orioles use a third catcher, perhaps Sam Huff, at some point in the season, particularly if one of the catchers has an injury that will keep them out a few days but isn’t serious enough for them to be placed on the injured list.
Question: I noticed in today’s article that a number of position players were listed as taking batting practice. I understand the issues surrounding the three potential first basemen. Was there a particular reason why Ryan Mountcastle did not take batting practice? Is he currently at spring training? From: Nancy Giomo
Answer: Nancy, Craig Albernaz was asked about Mountcastle, who is at spring training and was in the clubhouse on Monday. He hasn’t taken batting practice in Ed Smith Stadium yet.
“Everything is great with Mounty,” Albernaz said. “He’s just being real particular with his work. Mounty is a vet. It’s not his first rodeo, not his first spring training. He knows what he has to do to get ready, and he’s also been getting some quality time with our new hitting guys and getting acclimated with them. Mounty’s getting great work. He’ll be out there today, and it’ll be fun. I’m excited to see him.”
Most weekdays, I’ll be answering at least one Orioles question. If you’d like to submit a question, send it to: [email protected]. Questions may be edited for clarity, length and style.
