The Orioles signed switch-hitting outfielder Dylan Carlson to a one-year contract on Monday. The 28-year-old, who was the 33rd overall choice by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2016 draft, hit a combined .209 last season with St. Louis and the Tampa Bay Rays.
Carlson hit three home runs and 25 RBIs with a .593 OPS in 96 games.
He played with the Cardinals from 2020-2024, and was traded on July 30th to the Rays for former Orioles right-hander Shawn Armstrong.
Carlson’s best season came in 2021 when he hit .266 with a .780 OPS, 18 home runs and 65 RBIs in 149 games in St. Louis. He finished third in the National League Rookie of the Year voting. He has a lifetime .792 OPS against left-handed pitching.
A former teammate of Tyler O’Neill with the Cardinals, Carlson has played mostly center and right field but has started 42 games in left field in his 484-game major league career.
To make room for Carlson on the 40-man roster, the Orioles designated infielder Jacob Amaya for assignment.
