Orioles outfielder Colton Cowser had surgery to repair his fractured left hand on Tuesday, the team announced. Cowser was hit on the hand in the fifth inning of Game 2 of the Orioles’ Wild Card Series with Kansas City when the struck out on an inside pitch by Angel Zerpa.
The Orioles say that the surgery performed by Dr. Donald Sheridan in Phoenix was successful. Cowser is expected to be ready for spring training in February.
Cowser’s strikeout with the bases loaded represented the Orioles’ best scoring opportunity in a game they lost, 1-0, and ended their season.
He remained in the game in the sixth inning but was replaced by Heston Kjerstad in left field before the seventh.
Cowser was named a finalist for the Gold Glove among American League leftfielders earlier on Tuesday. He’s also a contender for the AL Rookie of the Year.
He hit .242 with a .768 OPS, 24 home runs and 69 RBIs in 153 games.
