The Orioles optioned infielder Coby Mayo to Triple-A Norfolk and purchased the contract of outfielder Daniel Johnson.
Johnson, who was hitting .259 with 21 home runs and 76 RBIs at Norfolk, is a left-handed hitting outfielder and could get playing time because centerfielder Cedric Mullins was unavailable on Friday night because of neck discomfort. Mullins collided with Austin Slater in the outfield on Thursday.
Johnson was on the taxi squad for a day last month when Mullins was hurt but wasn’t promoted to the Orioles. In 35 games with Cleveland in 2020 and 2021, Johnson hit .202 with four home runs and five RBIs.
Mayo, who was named the Orioles’ Minor League Player of the Year on Friday, was hitting 4-for-41 (.098) in 17 games with the Orioles. The 22-year-old, who started at first base on Friday night, was 1-for-17 in his first stint last month, and 3-for-24 since he was recalled from Norfolk on September 1st.
Mayo will be eligible for the postseason roster.
