Orioles’ Coulombe set for Wednesday rehab assignment; Rodriguez making progress

BALTIMORE—Orioles left-handed reliever Danny Coulombe, who had surgery to remove bone chips in his left elbow on June 18th, will pitch for Triple-A Norfolk at Durham on Wednesday in his first rehab assignment.

Coulombe, who is 1-0 with a 2.42 ERA and one save in 20 games and hasn’t allowed any of his 12 inherited runners to score, hasn’t pitched since June 8th.

Jacob Webb, who’s on the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation will throw his third rehab assignment for Norfolk on Tuesday.

Grayson Rodriguez is also making progress, Orioles pitching coach Drew French said. Rodriguez is on the injured list with right lat/teres discomfort.

“It’s like trade deadline 2.0,” French said. “Acquisitions by reinstatement from the IL. These guys are all doing really well … On the ground running with these guys. Huge acquisitions if we can get them back and healthy.”

Rodriguez doesn’t have a date for a rehab assignment.

“Grayson’s in the bullpen right now,” French said. “We’re hopeful that we’ll give a live [batting practice] and rehab assignment started pretty soon.”

Norfolk’s season ends on September 22nd, and Double-A Bowie’s ends on September 15th, so there isn’t much time for Rodriguez to get the necessary innings to be a full-fledged starter.

“We know we’re coming up against it right now,” French said. “We’re very hopeful with the plan that we have in place with the medical team and the front office. We’re hopeful to have him back in that capacity. Obviously, everything is on the table at this point. We’ll take it day-by-day and see where we’re at at the end.”
