CHICAGO—Through seven innings, the Orioles had been shut out on three hits. They trailed the Chicago White Sox, the team with the worst record in baseball, by three runs.
But in the eighth, the Orioles’ bats came alive. Ryan O’Hearn and Anthony Santander each hit two-run home runs, and Jordan Westburg also homered in a five-run inning that powered the Orioles to a 5-3 win over the White Sox before 22,283 at Guaranteed Rate Field on Saturday.
It was third straight win for the Orioles (32-18) over the White Sox (15-38).
Dillon Tate (2-0), who was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk on Friday, was also instrumental in the comeback victory. He pitched 2 1/3 perfect innings, striking out four. Cionel Pérez pitched a perfect ninth for his first save.
The Orioles had only three singles against Chicago starter Erick Fedde, who worked 6 1/3 scoreless innings.
In the eighth, Adley Rutschman walked with one out against Jordan Leasure. O’Hearn hit his seventh home run, cutting the Orioles’ deficit to 3-2.
Ryan Mountcastle singled against Michael Kopech (1-4). Santander hit his ninth home run, his second in three days, and the Orioles led, 4-3. After Colton Cowser struck out, Westburg, who had two of the three hits against Fedde, hit his eighth home run to put the Orioles up, 5-3.
Subbing on short notice for Dean Kremer, who was placed on the injured list with a strained right triceps,, Albert Suárez gave the Orioles four shutout innings. When Keegan Akin replaced Suárez in the fifth inning and gave up three runs.
Akin walked Andrew Benintendi to begin the fifth. Nicky Lopez singled, and after Martin Maldonado moved both runners up with a sacrifice bunt, Tommy Pham walked to load the bases. Andrew Vaughn fouled out, and Gilman grad Gavin Sheets tripled to score all three runners.
Suárez allowed just two hits and two walks in his fourth start. He made three starts after his contract was purchased from Triple-A Norfolk on April 17th and then was sent to the bullpen and had seven relief outings. When Kremer went to the 15-day injured list on Friday, the Orioles chose Suárez to replace him.
Notes: The Orioles acquired right-handed pitcher Thaygo Vieira and minor league right-hander Aneuris Rodriguez from the Milwaukee Brewers for minor league right-hander Garrett Stallings. … The last time the Orioles hit three home runs in an inning was on June 1st, 2022 when they hit three in the sixth inning against Seattle.
