BALTIMORE—The Orioles placed right-hander Grayson Rodriguez on the 15-day injured list on Wednesday, retroactive to Tuesday, because of right shoulder inflammation. It’s the same injury that landed another starter, Tyler Wells, on the injured list.

They activated left-hander John Means, who had been on the injured list because of a left forearm strain. Right-hander Kyle Bradish, who also has been on the injured list because of a sprain of the right ulnar collateral ligament, is expected back soon as well.

Manager Brandon Hyde said Rodriguez acknowledged there was an issue on Tuesday, the day after he threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings against the New York Yankees, leading to a 2-0 victory.

Hyde didn’t have much information about Rodriguez.

“I don’t have a sense yet. I’m staying optimistic,” he said. “We’re definitely doing this to be precautionary, but he woke up after his start the next morning with some right shoulder soreness.

“He had some tests yesterday. He’s getting some tests now, in the next couple of days. I just wanted to give him at least a couple of weeks off to calm down. He’s a big part of our rotation. We need him this year. We’re just giving him some time off.”

Rodriguez wasn’t in the clubhouse when it was open to the media on Wednesday.

“There’s a lot of things to still happen,” Hyde said. “We’re staying optimistic about it. His shoulder was sore a little more than normal after his start the other day.”
