BALTIMORE—Corbin Burnes pitched well for the Orioles in his first six starts, and he did again in his seventh on Wednesday night. But Burnes didn’t pitch well enough to win, and the Orioles had no offense against Luis Gil in their 2-0 loss to the New York Yankees before 24,180 fans at Camden Yards.
It was the first time the Orioles were shut out this season.
The Orioles (19-11) defeated the Yankees (20-12) in the first two games of the four-game series, and with one game remaining on Thursday afternoon, they still lead the American League East by percentage points.
Burnes (3-1) struck out five batters in the first two innings, and the game was scoreless through four.
With two outs in the fifth, Jose Trevino delivered a single and Oswaldo Cabrera hit his fourth home run just over the right field scoreboard and just fair to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead.
The Orioles had just two hits against Gil in 6 1/3 innings. Heston Kjerstad had a one-out single in the third and Jordan Westburg had a one-out single in the fifth. Gil (2-1) struck out five and walked one, Ryan O’Hearn, leading off the seventh.
After Ryan Mountcastle flied to deep right, Caleb Ferguson relieved Gil and struck out Colton Cowser and Westburg.
In the bottom of the eighth, Cedric Mullins walked against Ian Hamilton. Kjerstad was hit by a pitch. Anthony Santander, pinch-hitting for Ramón Urías, fouled out to Trevino. Yankees closer Clay Holmes struck out Gunnar Henderson and Adley Rutschman, ending Rutschman’s career high 11-game hitting streak.
O’Hearn singled against Holmes leading off the ninth. Mountcastle struck out. Cowser hit into a force play and Westburg grounded to third as Holmes recorded his 10th save.
