Orioles’ Hyde hopes Holliday’s 1st hit will free him for many more

BALTIMORE—Jackson Holliday is again in the Orioles’ lineup for Monday night’s game against Minnesota, batting ninth and playing second base.

Holliday’s first hit as a major leaguer came in the seventh inning of Sunday’s game. After the game, the 20-year-old, who was promoted last Tuesday, said he hoped it would be the first of many.

“I could definitely feel the relief, and the comfort is starting to come in,” Holliday said.

The first hit was perhaps the hardest to get.

“Especially in his case where everybody is watching and everybody is paying attention,” manager Brandon Hyde said. “More eyes than normal on him and a ton of pressure. You can hear people pulling for him from the stands.

“During the Apple TV game [on Friday], there was a camera in his face the entire game. It’s tough to play that way, tough league. Look up there and see that he’s got one hit and [hope] that it propels him to more. Whenever you’re sitting on a zero, it’s not easy, no matter who you are, but especially in his situation.”
