10th-inning homers by Henderson, Cowser power Orioles to 9-4 win over Red Sox

BOSTON—After the Orioles and Boston Red Sox played nine tight innings, the Orioles exploded for six runs in the 10^th for a 9-4 win before 26,230 at Fenway Park on Thursday night.

Gunnar Henderson had struck out three straight times before he hit an opposite-field home run over the Green Monster, a two-run shot. Jackson Holliday, the automatic runner at second, scored when Henderson blasted a 2-2 pitch from Isaiah Campbell (0-1).

After Cedric Mullins added an RBI single, Colton Cowser hit his second home run of the game, a three-run shot to right on a 3-0 pitch.

Cowser not only hit his first two career home runs, but he had six hits and 10 RBIs in the series.

The Orioles (8-4) swept the three-game series against the Red Sox (7-5) and return home Friday night to play Milwaukee.

Craig Kimbrel (2-0) pitched a perfect ninth to keep the game tied, 3-3, and Mike Baumann worked the 10^th.

Mullins’ RBI single scored Ryan O’Hearn to give the Orioles a three-run lead in the 10^th before Cowser followed with the three-run shot.

In the first, Jarren Durran led off with a double and moved to third on an infield out by Masataka Yoshida and scored on Triston Casas’ ground-rule double. Casas’ ball bounced just fair out of the reach of Holliday, who ran to short right field. Casas scored on Wilyer Abreu’s double against Oriole starter Grayson Rodriguez.

While Holliday had difficulty with popups in his first two games, he made a nice stop on Yoshida’s ground ball in the first, and Tyler O’Neill’s in the third.

Rodriguez threw 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on six hits, walking two and striking out five, throwing 94 pitches.

Whitlock allowed one run on four hits in five innings. Justin Slaten pitched two hitless innings.

After being held to just one run and four hits in seven innings, Anthony Santander hit a two-home run in the eighth to give the Orioles a 3-2 lead.

Holliday, who’s hitless in his eight major league at-bats, reached on an error by third baseman Pablo Reyes to begin the eighth against Joely Rodriguez. Henderson struck out, and Adley Rutschman hit a ground ball to second baseman Ceddanne Rafaela, who flipped it to shortstop David Hamilton, who then threw to first for the out on Rutschman.

It appeared to be a double play, but it was ruled that Hamilton didn’t touch second and Holliday was safe at second. Santander followed with his third home run to give the Orioles a 3-2 lead.

Connor Wong homered against Danny Coulombe with two outs in the eighth to tie the score, 3-3.
