Two days after acquiring left-handed hitting first baseman Ryan O’Hearn from the Kansas City Royals, the Orioles designated him for assignment after they claimed another left-handed hitting first baseman, Lewin Díaz, off waivers from the Atlanta Braves.
This is Díaz’s second stint this offseason with the Orioles. Díaz was originally selected off waivers from Pittsburgh on December 2nd and after being designated for assignment when the Orioles signed right-handed reliever Mychal Givens, he was traded to the Braves for cash considerations on December 23rd.
Díaz, who’s 26, hit .169 with five home runs and 11 RBIs in 58 games with Miami last season. Over the last three seasons, Díaz hit .181 in 112 games with the Marlins.
The Orioles hope that O”Hearn, who agreed to a one-year, $1.4 million contract with the Royals before last month’s deadline for tendering contracts, will pass through waivers so he can be invited to spring training as a non-roster player.
