Orioles name Fuller, Borgschulte co-hitting coaches

The Orioles have decided to go with co-hitting coaches for the 2022 season. Ryan Fuller, who was the hitting coach at Double-A Bowie, will be joined by Matt Borgschulte, who was with the Minnesota Twins organization.

Fuller and Borgschulte, both 31, replace Don Long, who was fired after three seasons as the team’s hitting coach, and his assistant, José Hernández, who reportedly will be reassigned.

Fuller, who carried the title Full Season Hitting Coordinator, joined the organization before the 2020 season and worked with Oriole prospects Adley Rutschman, infielders Gunnar Henderson and Jordan Westburg and outfielder Kyle Stowers with the Baysox.

After playing for the University of Connecticut, Fuller played 32 games for Arizona’s Rookie League team in 2012 and worked at a private hitting school before joining the Orioles. He was scheduled to be Delmarva’s hitting coach for the 2020 season.

Borgschulte was the hitting coach for Triple-A St. Paul in 2021 and spent four years in the Twins’ organization. In 2017, he coached in the St. Louis Cardinals organization. Borgschulte was a volunteer coach at his college, Drury University, in 2014.

The Orioles have not announced assignments for the rest of their coaching staff and traveling party. Coaches from 2021 — Tim Cossins, major league field coordinator/catching instructor; Fredi González, major league coach; Darren Holmes, assistant pitching/bullpen; Chris Holt, pitching; Tony Mansolino, third base; and Anthony Sanders, first base — are expected to return but could have different roles.

  • Co pitching coaches? Hmmmmm. Why not?
Reminiscent of the “Flanabeattie” approach at first blush. Sorry; it was the first thing that came to mind.
I wish them the best of luck.

    • They're batting coaches Icty.

Remember, the Boy Genius decided to reward and retain our pitching coach due to the slam bang job he did with the kiddies this year.

    • Oh. Ooops. Thanks boogster. My rush to humor backfired. Holt is hero material.

For what it’s worth, it looks like the team batting average was .239 last year.
      Team ERA was 5.84.
Whoever is coaching, I hope they possess the wisdom of Solomon and can disseminate some of it.

  • Rich,

Can you dig deeper into all these core injuries this year in addition to the ones you mentioned you had Hunter Harvey with a lat injury in an interview Harvey says it occurred after a new exercise. You also had Santander start the season with an oblique.

It seems that half the roster had some type of soft tissue injury .

Lastly who could forget the Bruce Zimmerman ankle injury which occurred in the weight room.

Then they fire the conditioning coach . What was going on ?

    • A lot of these injuries were due to the return of the 162-game season following a 60-game season. The Orioles, until the last weeks of the season had one of the lowest injury rates in the majors.

      • Just a longtime impression: Losing teams have a lot more players going off with injuries than winning teams, especially at the end of games or the end of a season. Second thought: during the season the O's had a lot of guys who weren't up long enough to get overuse injuries.

  • Fun Fact!
Borgschulte worked under The Yankees new hitting coach, Dillon Lawson at Southeast Missouri state and The Red Sox hitting coach. Peter Fatse when he was with the Twins.
