Orioles put Mountcastle on 7-day concussion injured list

BALTIMORE—Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle was placed on the seven-day concussion injured list, retroactive to Saturday, before Sunday’s game.

Mountcastle left Friday night’s game after two innings. He was trying to steal second and was hit in the head when tagged out.

“Disappointing, I talked to him this morning. He’s feeling a lot better today,” manager Brandon Hyde said. “He’s trending in the right direction. Concussions are serious, and we’re taking it seriously.”

Mountcastle is batting .264 with 19 home runs and 63 RBIs.

“We’re making sure he’s going to be OK. He’s following the protocol with the tests and checking in every day and making sure that symptoms are going down and, hopefully, he’s going to be OK soon.”

The Orioles recalled left-handed pitcher Alexander Wells from Triple-A Norfolk. Wells was sent back to the Tides after he allowed six runs on seven hits in 2 1/3 innings in Tuesday’s 13-1 loss to the New York Yankees.

Monday is a day off, and the Orioles will reassess their roster before Tuesday’s game against Detroit.

Catcher Pedro Severino won’t be going on the 10-day injured list, Hyde said. Severino bruised his right knee bruise in Saturday night’s game and was replaced by Austin Wynns.

Infielder Ramón Urías is being rested because of upper leg soreness.

Infielder Domingo Leyba has cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to Triple=A Norfolk.

  • 5-3 O’s lead after 7, the Rays had them right where they wanted them. I said the other day it’s almost an embarrassment what the O’s are asking fans to pay money to see. Erase almost.

  • I have watching today’s game and now they are down 9 to 5. I think they need to post an add outside the park to say, pitchers wanted, apply within. Their relievers are sorry. Fans deserve better than this.

  • I wanna state here publicly just how much respect I have for O’s fans under the age of 40. It was very easy for me to be an O’s fan as in my youth they were often a contender and won their 3 world championships. I was only 6 in ‘66 so I have little recollection of that one but by ‘70 I was already hooked and have remained a loyal fan my entire life. But you guys and gals 40 and under, I truly applaud your willingness to put yourselves thru the suffering you’ve endured with only 11 seasons that have even ended with a winning record let alone a playoff appearance. And of course none of you have ever seen them win a WS unless you count the ‘83 season when you would’ve been 2 years old. Anyway, as much as I really, really wanna see them in another WS some day, if I don’t, I’ll always have my wonderful memories of my youth. It’s more for you folks and the loyalty you’re showing now that I hope someday you can look back and chuckle about what you’re all going through now. You deserve it.
